The former industrial Bekaert site is being transformed into a new residential neighbourhood along the River Scheldt. Park Aan De Stroom reactivates Hemiksem’s identity as a riverside municipality, embedding new housing within a generous and ecologically connected green framework. The project includes a first development phase with the construction of 134 dwellings. The landscape design focuses on a sequence of public spaces and intimate inner gardens that structure the neighbourhood and create a strong relationship between architecture and open space. Private gardens are complemented by shared green courtyards, encouraging social interaction while maintaining clear spatial identity.

Parking is clustered per building block, allowing the landscape to take precedence and reinforcing ecological links with the Scheldt embankments and nearby green areas, including the Abbey Park. Material choices subtly refer to the site’s industrial heritage through the use of red brick and rhythmic grid structures. Sustainability is embedded throughout the design, integrating water-sensitive strategies, renewable energy systems, circular construction principles and biodiversity enhancement, ensuring a future-proof and locally anchored residential environment.
