This project focuses on the transformation of a vacant inner courtyard, enclosed by residential buildings, a university facility, a swimming complex, and offices. The site plays a key role in a potential green corridor connecting Stropkaai and Stropstraat, ultimately linking to the Green Axis along the River Scheldt. The main challenge lies in integrating a new residential program — including student housing — while respecting the unique identity and functionality of the surrounding context. Our design approach embraces the existing environment, incorporating natural microrelief, vegetation, architectural elements, and reclaimed materials.
The area is made accessible through logical and inclusive circulation, ensuring that it remains open even outside the operating hours of the adjacent swimming facility. This creates a vibrant, welcoming space for both residents and visitors. Special attention is given to calm and connection: seating areas and a park-like layout invite moments of rest in a quiet, green urban retreat.
